Island

An archipelago of six islands consists of Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Le as the major islands. The superb scenery of the islands includes high hills with jutting cliffs surrounded by marvelous beaches and emerald sea, hiding underneath a bank of coral reefs and colorful marine life. Places to visit of Mu Koh Phi Phi include

Koh Phi Phi Don covers a total area of 28 square kilometers : 8 kilometers in length and 3.5 at its broadest point. At the north end is Cape Laem Thong, where there is a Chao Ley, or sea gipsy village. These sea gypsies emigrated from Koh Lipeh in Tarutao National Park, near the border with Malaysia. Diving at Laem Thong is excellent, as it is also at Hua Rah Ket to the extreme south. There are long beaches with rocks scattered about. Two curving bays are especially beautiful : Ton Sai and Loh Dalam. This is also where accommodations and tourist services are found.

Koh Phi Phi Ley is 6.6 square kilometers in total area : 3 kilometers in length and 1 at its broadest point. The island is entirely limestone and steep cliffs rising from the sea very nearly ring it. Surrounding waters average about 20 meters in depth, reaching 34 meters at the deepest point off the island's southern tip. Phi Phi Ley has several beautiful bays : Pileh, Maya and Loh Samah ; Ao Pileh is very nearly enclosed by the limestone walls of the island's cliffs, so that the water appears almost to be an island sea. On Phi Phi Ley's northeast is the famous Viking Cave; this was renamed by H.M.Rama IX when he visited it in 1972, Tam Pya Nak, from the shape of a particular boulder, which resembles in shape the head of the great serpent of Buddhist legend, the Naga. It is a place much revered by the local people who come there to collect the swift's nests used to make Bird's Nest Soup, a Chinese delicacy. On the eastern and southern walls of the cave are colored drawings dating from historic times. There are pictures of elephants and also of various boats : European, Arab and Chinese sailing ships ; baroques, motorboats, and steamships. It is theorized that these pirates who paused in their travels from west to east, sheltering in the cave to escape the monsoon winds, transfer cargo, or make repairs. Travel to the Phi Phi Islands Tour operators in both Phuket and Krabi provide transport and tour packages to this popular destination. Regular boat service is available form Jao Fah pier in Krabi.

Laem Tong Beach

Laem Tong Beach is a delightful place in northern Phi Phi Don for a relaxing quiet holiday. The only access to the main part of Phi Phi is by boat, this means you have almost total seclusion. The atmosphere is quite the opposite of Tonsai Village, as here you'll hardly leave your hotel.
The 4 resorts starting at the northern tip are Phi Phi Natural Resort, Zeavola Resort, PP Erawan Resort and the Phi Phi Holiday Inn Resort and are all on the beach on the eastern side of the peninsular. Right in front of the beach here, although too far to swim to, are Bamboo Island, Mosquito Island and Hin Klang, three of the best spots for snorkelling and diving in Phi Phi. In the distance you can see Railay Beach and Koh Lanta. The seafloor is a uniform depth for at least a hundred metres until the coral begins, shortly after that is the drop off, a large colourful reef that descends to the depths.

Laem Tong Beach Activities

Laem Tong Beach is a serene spot, however there are some activities to get the pulse going. The warm flat water and consistent wind is excellent for windsurfing, and equipment can be hired at the hotels. Swim out to the drop off and you'll find excellent snorkelling. At the north end of the beach you don't have to swim so far to see the coral in front of Phi Phi Natural Resort. Longtails can take you out to see Bamboo or Mosquito Island, the beaches are stunning and the snorkelling amazing, just remember to arrange a time to be picked up!
For those interested in diving there are at least two dive centres that offer dive courses and can handle all your dive-related requirements.
As the sun drops you might find some of the locals, hotel staff members and guests playing football (soccer) or volleyball on the beach; feel free to join in.

How to Getting to Laem Tong Beach

A longtail boat to/from Tonsai Village costs 1000 baht (2008), more at night.
Each morning at 7am there's a ferry to Tonsai Village, it takes about an hour and the price is 100 Baht (2008).
Destination Air seaplanes now fly direct to Laem Tong Beach from Phuket Airport up to four times daily, using this service will add an extra day or more to your holiday depending on you flight connections. Where to Stay on Laem Tong Beach?

Holiday Inn Resort Phi Phi has bungalows right on the beach and good facilities in a stunning setting.
Zeavola Resort is a high-standard innovative resort. Beach bungalows are spacious and equipped with a TV and DVD player. Good landscaping means that the resort is well hidden, secluded with great facilities.

How to eat?

Jasmin Restaurant is the most popular eatery on the beach, probably due to the combination of no frills good food, cheap prices and great atmosphere. Tables are limited, often you need to book before lunchtime to get a table in the evening. Open throughout the day the menu consists of Thai dishes and catch of the day. Almost next door is Holiday Inn's Chaba Seafood with a daily selection of fresh seafood on an ice platter. Fairly expensive.
Jasmin Restaurant has the most life on a quiet beach, the beach shack is brimming with atmosphere.
